🚨
DANGER β€” Oxidizing Chemical Sodium Hypochlorite (bleach / SH) is a strong oxidizer and corrosive. Improper handling can cause severe chemical burns, respiratory damage, and generate toxic chlorine gas if mixed with acids or ammonia-based products. Always read the SDS before use.
Required PPEβ„Ή
πŸ₯½Chemical splash goggles
🧀Nitrile/neoprene gloves (not latex)
🦺Chemical-resistant apron
πŸ‘’Rubber / chemical-resistant boots
😷Respirator (N95 min for misting)
πŸ‘•Long sleeves / covered skin

NIOSH IDLH (Clβ‚‚)10 ppm
Shelf Life3–6 months at cool temp; degrades ~50% per year at 20Β°C
StorageCool, dark, dry. Keep away from heat, acids, ammonia, metals, organic materials. Use HDPE containers.
DisposalDilute with large amounts of water. Do not pour concentrated SH into storm drains. Follow local regulations.
⚠️ Never Mix Withβ„Ή
Acids
Vinegar, muriatic acid, pH-Down, citric acid β†’ generates Clβ‚‚ gas
Ammonia / Amines
Window cleaners, urine β†’ generates chloramine gas
Hydrogen Peroxide
Violent decomposition, oxygen release, splash hazard
Rubbing Alcohol
Forms chloroform and other toxic chlorinated compounds
Metals
Corrosion of iron, aluminum; avoid non-HDPE containers
Other Cleaners
Check SDS of every surfactant for chlorine compatibility
πŸ₯ First Aidβ„Ή
Skin Contact Remove contaminated clothing. Flush skin with large amounts of water for at least 15 minutes. Seek medical attention for burns or prolonged exposure.
Eye Contact Immediately flush with water for at least 15–20 minutes, holding eyelids open. Seek emergency medical attention immediately.
Inhalation Move to fresh air immediately. If breathing is difficult, administer oxygen. Seek medical attention. Do not re-enter contaminated area without respiratory protection.
Ingestion Do NOT induce vomiting. Rinse mouth. Give water if conscious. Call Poison Control: 1-800-222-1222 or emergency services immediately.
Spill / Release Evacuate area. Ventilate. Do not allow entry into drains or waterways. Contain with absorbent material. Neutralize with dilute sodium thiosulfate if available.
βœ… Safe Mixing Protocolβ„Ή
1
Don PPE first. Goggles, gloves, and apron before opening any container.
2
Add water to tank first. Never add water to concentrated SH β€” always SH into water.
3
Add SH slowly. Pour SH gently along the side of the tank. Do not splash.
4
Add surfactant last. After SH is diluted, add surfactant at your calculated oz/gal rate.
5
Label and secure. Label all containers with contents and concentration. Cap tightly. Store upright in shade.
This safety reference is for field guidance only and does not replace the full manufacturer SDS.
Always obtain and read the complete SDS for every chemical product used on the job.
